Welcome to Adam Kesher, if you've not already been introduced (and if not, why not?! I guess this is where I come in.....)

Hailing from Bordeaux (yes another bunch of French whizz-kids) these boys have been around for a little while now and after clutching them ever so close to my chest for the past 18 months I feel ready to share their power-pop warmth with those of you that are still strangers.

So - not a brand spanking new band still finding their feet but a fighting fit sextet running bare foot Usain Bolt style. Brothers Gaeten & Julien lead the line, backed up by a group of very talented young men, some with moustaches. (Mmm, moustache - Lea). Their music seems to transcend through most contemporary rock comparables effortlessly without ever sounding contrived or familiar, these boys more than hold their own. Soaked in a piping hot late 80's Rock marmalade you're either going to get them or ...just simply not. But if you do, within seconds, you're going to fall in love.

P-Katerine is a song that will make your hair stand on end, and is the On Dancefloors recommendation to begin your infatuation. Songs like Local Girl and Modern Times back it up, predicting a candescent future for the semi-moustached band.

Sitting comfortably within the highly respected label ranks at Disque Primeur, and having been the first signing to Puregroove's own record label 'Lost In Paris', Adam Kesher have released their first full length album 'Heading For The Hills, Feeling Warm Inside' back in April time.

If you found yourself uncontrollably attracted to The Teenagers waaaay back, then you may get that similar buzz with Adam Kesher, only this time around you'll find a little more substance.

I SAW THE FUTURE: THE GEEKS WERE RIGHT.

The new terribly-misspelt album from The Faint, 'Fasciinatiion', is released on their new brilliantly-named record label 'Blank.wav'. It sees the band go more towards their electronic 'Danse Macabre' style, yet still taking influence from the string-instrument-enhanced 'Wet From Birth'.

The album as a whole doesn't nearly make quite an impact as either of these albums did on my ears - but it's by no means their worst album. As far as alternative-electro music goes it's a very decent set of songs.

Album opener 'Get Seduced' includes many bleeps and beeps, with new influences, but still holding the trademark heavy bass riff and electronic melodies.
The stand out track for me is 'The Geeks Were Right', a bizarre look into the future where the popular guys are "egghead boys, with thin white legs" and have "modified features and software brains". It reminds me of a surreal Orwellian dream I had once, "Eyeballs float in wet green grass, I'm in a chainsaw choir, In dreams that bend, To let me cut through time".
The two main songs about relationships, 'Psycho' and 'I Treat You Wrong', have quite a pop structure about them and are almost sing-along, especially the former.

If you're a Faint fan you'll more than likely love this album. But if you're not familiar with them yet, hopefully this album could serve as an introduction to their impressive back catalogue.

It's about time i started our 'Songs of the Summer' feature.
But before i do, i MUST share this band with you.

Sadly, a quick google tells me i'm 3 days behind Guardian Online.
Shame.

Apparently, BOY CRISIS have a massive A&R buzz around them at the moment, hardly surprising, given the quality production and fucking weird lyrics.

"My guess is that you might bless me with your Holy water just like you were the Pope baby".
Mmm.

However, Guardian Online seem to have an infinite amount of information which they've conjured from some sort of musical magic top hat.

Last.Fm can only tell me that "Boy Crisis is a quartet that lives in NYC - funky/edgy discoteque tracks" - MYSTERIOUZ!

One thing that i DON'T get is the MGMT comparisons. Considering how little i can find on Boy Crisis - these comparisons are splurged across everywhere that the bands name is mentioned. The band even call their management MGMT on their profile - wtf? Have i missed some massive connection here? Apart from both bands country of birth?

The demise of the 'music festival' this year is completely inarguable (get your top quality journalism right here!) with Zoo8, Blissfields, Wild in the Country, 1234 to name but a few that haven't gone so well..

Offsetfestival.co.uk promises that they are "avoiding the same old "safe" lineup", taking "risks with it's bands whilst focusing on quality, promising an unforgettable weekend for a ludicrously cheap price."

(We all know what they mean by 'safe' lineups now, don't we? ;) And who can say no to 'ludicrously cheap'?!)

The line-up includes Gang of Four, The Maccabees, Chrome Hoof, Metronomy, and recent additions Johnny Foreigner and Blood Red Shoes. Other artists include On Dancefloors firm favourites O Children, The Violets, Electricity in our Homes and Ulterior.

DISAPPOINTED NO MORE, GET DANCING ON DANCEFLOORS

The world of musical leaks has been a bit boring lately, with late of the pier (do they still do the lowercase thing?) only recently spicing up the world of illegal downloading in the last week with the is it/isn't it debate on what appears to be Fantasy Black Channel.

However, all ye musical pirates (yarrgh!) - fear ye not, Mount's long awaited "Nights Out" (Currently due for release in September 08) has just filtered onto the vast seas of the internet. Stupid ocean metaphors aside - i'm very excited.

As i've previously mentioned (in my first post, ever - was it that long ago? - see HERE), 'On Dancefloors' holds the oh-so appropriate title of this blog, and is one of Josephs finest creations. A story of "disappointment on dancefloors", i'm sure you can imagine my utter joy when seeing it on the tracklisting... i reluctantly post it on here as it's been a 'closely guarded secret' since 2006, (may i emphasise that these are NOT my own words! haha) however, I think it's only fair that at least ONE manifestation of On Dancefloors gets the success it deserves, right? ;)

I think Nights Out will surprise the most cynically-minded of you, with it appearing to be slightly more accessible than Pip Paine (Pay the £5000 You Owe).

Metronomy haven't completely disowned Pip Paine (PT£5YO), with opener 'Nights Intro' bridging the gap perfectly.
Doing what they do second-best to making "calculator-rock-punk-funk-electro-blimpoid-whatever music"(See NME.com), they've gone and done what sounds like a complete re-hash of 'Hear to Wear,' resulting in 'The End of You Too'.

It's also quite a pleasant surprise to hear some vocals - tracks included under this 'type' are 'Radio Ladio' and 'Heartbreaker', which have also been firm live favourites since early 07.

I'm fully aware that it's time to stop my gushing.

Joseph, Gabriel, Oscar, you bloody clever geeks, nobody pushes those lights quite so well.

All the best, and to you lot - for fucks sake, BUY THE ALBUMS.

NOT SO WILD IN THE COUNTRY?

Sadly, the highlight of my July has been cancelled.
And i apologise for the awful title of this blog.

Stately Events Ltd is extremely disappointed to announce the cancellation of the Wild in the Country festival at Knebworth Park on Saturday 5th July.

The cancellation is due to lower than expected ticket sales and a key investor withdrawing at the last minute, leaving the event in an unsustainable position.

This is a very sad conclusion to our passionate efforts to develop an interesting and credible addition to the UK festival market. Unfortunately, Wild in the Country has become the latest in a series of festivals that have suffered from a unique and well-documented set of market forces this summer.

We did everything possible to make the event happen and would like to apologise to all those who have purchased tickets, and for the inconvenience this cancellation may have caused.

The Organisers will make every effort to ensure that ticket purchases will be refunded.

I can't say i'm at all surprised, even before both Bjork AND Battles cancelled, there was no secret about the lack of ticket sales.

A massive shame, but here's to Field Day!

TEEN CREEPS I'VE SEEN YOU ON MY STREET.

No Age is a noise/experimental/punk band from beautiful Los Angeles, California.
As if this wasn’t a comfortable enough existence on its own they’ve gone about becoming one of the hippest bands of their kind about.
Firstly, they're a two-piece, something I’m lucky enough to share in common with them.
On top of the coolness that comes with being a Los Angeles 2-Piece in '07 they brought out five limited edition singles and EPs on 5 different labels, with each sleeve plastered with a different letter. When the collection was complete, the sleeves would spell No Age. There's nothing like stealing marketing ploys from a certain infamous series of Mr Men books....
On top of this they’ve played in the middle of Los Angeles River, a vegan grocery store and Los Angeles Central Library. So before I’d even heard their music, they’d thoroughly earned my admiration (and jealousy).

Being the favourites of the blogosphere I guess I should have latched on earlier. But with my birthday coming up I thought ‘NOUNS’ would make a lovely birthday present. And surprise surprise - it has.

I wouldn’t say I’m massively into the Punk/Noise Rock sound but there’s something about the distorted, trebly, punk, fuzz-pop of this album (sorry, I’m not big on simple descriptions) that draws you in. The songs fit together perfectly, with moments of ambience to give your ears a wee rest between tracks. Although there aren’t any songs that really stick out for me as hit singles, the album as a whole works perfectly. A far cry from the uniformed, uninspiring, ‘indie by numbers’ albums that are currently covering the HMV shelves, ‘Nouns’ offers a pounding, raucous, headache-maker of an album. Although lacking hooks, the album cuts from song to song easily with tracks such as ‘Eraser’ and with ‘Here Should Be My Home’ seeming the most likely to get radio airplay.

Somehow I don’t think karaoke and chanting fans are high on this bands list of priorities, and it’s just as well because the regulars of an inner-city Gloucester pub couldn’t do this album justice.

Sounding like a jam session between Death From Above 1979 and The Fall Of Troy, Adebisi Shank (brilliant name, I know) are a 2/3rds Irish, 1/3rd English band based in Wexford, Republic of Ireland.

To say that their music was normal would be a lie. To say it was a particular genre would, again, be a lie. To say they were conventional.... well, you get the pattern. While Adebisi Shank create some of the most peculiar and mind-boggling music I've heard in months, it's fair to say that it's also some of the most captivating.

Songs are constructed using complex and mathematical song structures, creating unpredictability in the music. When listening to Adebisi Shank you can't help but wonder what's going to come next, as they possess the unique ability to surprise and shock you mid-way through a song. While producing music that is not only melodic and catchy, the occasional prog-esque guitar wig-out will sneak in to show off just how insane and brilliant the band is.

Mysterious bass player 'Vince' is also the mastermind behind his solo project The Vinny Club, producing 8-bit chiptune electro with a disturbing obsession with the Rocky films. The music scene may be awash with chiptune at the moment, but The Vinny Club manages to shake off the usual pitfalls to produce amazingly catchy 80's infused electro pop.

Simply put, the songs sound like the cross between a Commodore 64 and 80's synth pop, and the creators of Street Fighter II will be kicking themselves that such a slice of fried gold was not around when the game's soundtrack was being finalised. Some chiptune electro that's around at the moment can sound dated and quite frankly annoying, but it's artists like The Vinny Club who are propelling electro into the 21st Century.

The Good Natured is:
A solo artist: Sarah Mcintosh from Berkshire.
Instrument of choice: a Yamaha keyboard.

Armed with her trusty keys, she creates beautiful electro-pop melodies which are complimented by a soft vocal, backed up by punchy drum beats.
She willdefinitely be featured in my summer soundtrack. (Look forward to the tracks that we believe will define our summers in the next few posts! - Lea x)

How long have you been playing music for?
Well, i used to play the recorder, everyone played the recorder... it is a good instrument i think... and i did four grades in violin when i was little.
So i guess i have been playing music for a while! That's always the classic response to this question....

How long have you been performing as The Good Natured?
Not that long actually, about 5 months?
I set up my myspace at christmas 2007, and i think i have done about 6 gigs so far!

What are your influences?
I love beefy drum beats, my organ, summertime, memories, falling in love, falling out of love, spaceships, happiness, sadness, anger, hopes and fears, secrets...

What can people expect from your live shows?
Expect to see a visually exciting keyboard, me being really shy, oh yes and lots and lots of dancing!!

Any plans to release any records soon?
I am recording an ep at the beginning of July, so keep an eye out for that.
I am really excited about it, containing four songs: three brand new ones plus "Heart of Stone".

REST NOW WEARY HEAD, YOU WILL GET WELL SOON.

Get Well Soon is the musical project and band founded by German multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter Konstantin Gropper. Spending 3 years in his bedroom creating debut album 'Rest Now, Weary Head! You Will Get Well Soon', Gropper's talent and abilities are slowly being noticed and appreciated across Europe.

The album, released June 1st in the UK on NUDE Records, is already tipped to be album of the year in many music journalists' eyes, something of which is completely understandable after just one listen. 'Rest Now, Weary Head!…' is one of the most refreshing yet bewildering albums I've heard in a long time. The amazing ability of this album to make classical, folk and electro walk hand in hand seamlessly is something to not only be respected, but also thoroughly enjoyed.

While the music is one thing, Gropper's frighteningly wide-ranging voice adds such depth and character to the whole ensemble; it's difficult to accept these sounds are coming from one man. His voice bears a Josh Homme-esque quality, at times also sounding like Johnny Cash, all wrapped up in complete baritone splendour.

Every single song on the album has something wonderful and wholesome to offer, but it's the slightly odd inclusion of a cover of 'Born Slippy' by Underworld that has to stand out as a true testament to this man's genius. Described by Gropper as 'the Smells Like Teen Sprit of the techno generation', the familiar and recognisable pulse of the original is completely stripped and replaced with delicate pianos and abrasive drums, leaving his version twinkling and pirouetting like a 1920's music box.

Enough bumming from me, check this out right now so in the future you can say with pride in your heart 'I heard this before any of you', as it would be a crime against nature for Get Well Soon to not go galactic real soon.

Happy New Year Antoine. I'm fucked up bad but I'll be fine soon I'm sure.

Jaguar Love is a collaboration between Johnny Whitney and Cody Votolato from the now defunct spazzy post-hardcore mob The Blood Brothers plus drummer Jay Clark of Pretty Girls Make Graves.

The band's music sounds like the sort of dance-y alternative rock that Head Automatica might make if they took themselves more seriously by taking disco rock into the 21st century, making it no surprise that they were snapped up by Matador Records to release their limited edition EP 'Jaguar Love' and their forthcoming full length album, 'Take Me To The Sea'.

Listeners have been given a taste of the album already thanks to Matador's Intended Play Sampler for Spring 2008, in the form of the song 'Bats Over The Pacific Ocean', which shows a marked improvement in songwriting and production from their loveable and energetic EP.

The best thing about Jaguar Love though is undoubtedly singer Whitney, whose child like voice sounds like a clever mash up between Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria) and Benjamin Kowalewicz (Billy Talent), while at the same time creating something captivating and completely unique.

When a band drips with talent like these guys, fame is usually only round the corner, so check them out while you can before they go massive.

Ulterior don’t like you.
Don’t take it personally - they just couldn’t give a four-letter word what you think.

These boys plan to hit you hard with a fist of noise guitar, pulsating electronic bass and 'oh-so salacious' vocals. But you'll still wake up wide-eyed and smarting a cheeky grin at the night you spent together..

Previously trailed by Mute Records, Ulterior are now making a move with Disc Error Recordings and doing it with a swagger and half a bottle of absinthe in their leathers.

Comprising of three brothers Benn, Paul & Honey and a Lithuanian fella on synth called Karl, Ulterior are taking on the heavyweights, and are going to do it the old fashioned way.

With a brood of Japanese fans, interest from Shane Meadows and with Klaxons said to be taking notes at recent gigs, Ulterior should be dishing out electronic fused beatings for quite some time....

....assuming they don’t self-destruct.

Middlesbrough Music Live: ANKLES & Future of the Left.

For those of you who don't know about Middlesbrough Music Live, I'll fill you in a little. It's a completely free music festival based in the centre of Middlesbrough, which in the past has had acts such as: We Are Scientists, The Cooper Temple Clause, Bloc Party, Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, The Martini Henry Rifles, Dartz!, Foals, Ash (as this years headliner) and many many more. It's a great festival for local acts and bands doing the gruelling festival circuit to get noticed. The two stand-outs for me this year were Future Of The Left and ANKLES.

ANKLES

ANKLES is an uppercase-loving trio from Hartlepool in North-East England. Their sound has been described in various places as "The Shins but lower." Which in a twisted comical way does somewhat describe their sound, better than I'll be able to anyway. Using two bassists and a drummer, they create complex soundscapes which you find yourself getting lost inside, as they slowly build up and cascade down. In the rare event they use vocals, they treat them just as another instrument and they don't take more limelight from the drumbeats or the bass riffs at all.

In their song Angles, they use fingerclicks as part of the percussion in the most brilliant way, you just want to join in like some crazed jazz fan. If you can cope with not singing along to a song and can appreciate great talent of creating good instrumental music, you should definately check them out.

Future Of The Left

Future Of The Left is an "alternative rock supergroup" as stated on the infamous Wikipedia.
It consists of Jack Egglestone and Andy Falkous (both formerly of mclusky), Kelson Mathias (formerly of Jarcrew).

Checking their mics onstage before starting, they scream odd noises in various pitches, as the crowd, consisting mainly of kids in hoodies and hairdyes, look on bemused.
When they start, their sound is so raw and exciting compared to other bands I saw that day. I've never heard a keyboard sound so abrasive. Unfortunately, as soon as their first song starts half the crowd take it as a excuse to push and hit everyone within a 10 metre radius. As the first song draws to a close, the band ask people not to get so carried away and punching is definately not allowed. Summed up in bassist Mathias's words "This is supposed to be a gig, not fucking UFC". Luckily, this makes the situation a hell of a lot better and this progresses through the gig as the band use their wit to insult the wrong-do-ers in the crowd. Which leaves the rest of us to enjoy FOTL's awesome sound. Who would want to upset a band whose singer aggressively screams "There are no bold statements in my paradiddle" at the top of his voice? With the stuttering slower songs such as adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood to the 2 and a something minute scorchers like Small Bones Small Bodies, Future Of The Left have made some existing fans very happy and most definately drawn in some new ones too. As they finish with Falkous packing away Egglestone's drum kit to make him stop and then the bassist being carried offstage while still playing, it's clear to see that if you don't see these live, you're missing out on something special.

O Children is a London-based four piece, made up from previous members of BoNO MUST DIE.

Their sound is of a post punk nature containing a deep vocal juxtaposed against simple but sharp drum beats, resulting in a sinister, gloomy feel.

The stand out track on their Myspace has to be Ezekiels Son - a slow-tempoed track containing prominent drum beats placed in front of a soundscape of synths, with the vocal reminiscent of Joy Division's Ian Curtis.

Debut single 'Ace Breasts' has a frenetic feel, with a psychadelic-sounding guitar riff exploding and repeating throughout, backed up by strong drums and bass. (note: not to be confused with strong D'n'B ;) - lea.)

'Ace Breasts' is to be released through Puregroove Records on the 13th June.

With the imminent release of Elle Milano’s long long long awaited debut Acres of Dead Space Cadets on the 14Th April looming, as well as touring over April and finishing with the Great Escape and Hull Festivals, I thought now would be a great time to talk about lead singer Adam Crisp aka Kobe Winona's other projects.

The myspace gives little away about Entrepreneurs, so its not difficult to understand why I have only recently found out about them, and even then it was down to the sharing-caring side of a friend.

However, that unmistakable voice belongs to Crisp and it can only be said that this guy has talent spilling out of his ears. Also worth a mention is another project, Kobe & The Konsoles, however due to his commitments with Elle Milano, he hasn't released new material under either moniker since June 2007. Let’s hope that once the children of the world fall in love with Elle Milano, Kobe will return his focus back to his smaller projects.

Holding the inspiration for the title of this blog, it’s only fair to hand the focus of what’s sure to be a future bookmark for all the geeks of music land (yeah right) over to ...

Metronomy.

The first time Joseph Mount (+ Oscar and Gabriel) graced my presence was in a 100-capacity night club in Cheltenham (yes Cheltenham) early 2006.

So watching the pioneers of dance AND light-pushing play Reading last year was quite the proud moment.

Cheltenham never did hold the title for the height of music venues and/or new music lovers - with only recent years showing dedication from Pop Goes the Weasel, Coughing Colours (R.I.P - both sorely missed) and more recently Stereoplex and The Super Salon - but the intimacy of that gig will always stay with me. I was sat about 4ft away from the stage, with nothing but a pissed-up friend inbetween the band and I. It stirred something inside my head - i had a quick (see: drunk) conversation with a friend post-gig and we decided there and then that we’d make our own music (no euphemisms). A far-too ahead of it’s time Myspace page, a ridiculous name and many arguments over 2 years later, all we had to show from that night was, combined, a 15-date strong gig collection and an enormous love for Metronomy.
